I’m about five hours into Halo: Campaign Evolved. I’ve finished the brand-new opening missions and have started working my way through the original campaign.

And it just isn’t clicking….

I mean, this is the Halo I remember from 2001. In my mind’s eye, it even looks the same.

But it doesn’t feel the same.

I remember when Halo originally released and what a phenomenon it was. I would stay up late at a friend’s house, because I didn’t have an Xbox, and we would play until the wee hours of the morning.

Unlocking secrets, trying to beat the game on Legendary, and of course spending hours upon hours in multiplayer.

Everything Halo was doing back then felt new, groundbreaking, and amazing. The movement, level design, and story pacing were just incredible.

But that was 25 years ago.

As time moved forward, those ideas evolved into newer and better versions. We know more now. We know what feels good and what we expect from a modern shooter.

And well…

Halo CE doesn’t fit especially well in the modern age.

Games have evolved over the last 25 years, ESPECIALLY shooters. Just look at Halo Infinite. The movement, gunplay, and overall feel are VERY different from Halo CE, and those games are 20 years apart.

Now, for MANY people, that isn’t going to be a bad thing.

They’re going to love this incredibly faithful recreation of Halo CE for exactly what it is. A nostalgia drip directly into your eyes,

And honestly, had Microsoft made huge, sweeping changes, they would have had a very vocal and very upset fanbase.

So they played it safe.

What we have feels like basically a one-to-one remake with some quality-of-life updates. They repainted the outside, put an upgraded stove in the kitchen, and patched all the pipes.

But the bones of it still feel old.

So that leaves me here questioning whether I even want to continue playing.

I already know this story, and the gameplay hasn’t meaningfully evolved. Sure it looks amazing…. But instead of feeling familiar, it just feels dated.

And right now…

I don’t.

I’ll give it a few more hours, and we’ll see.
